Masser Potato Farms
Experienced Potato Growers
Masser Potato Farms is managed by eighth-generation
potato growers based in the beautiful Pennsylvania Dutch Hegins and Lykens
Valleys. The potato growers who run Masser Potato Farms combine years
of potato growing experience with today's newest technology to meet the
demands of modern business.
The original Sacramento, Pennsylvania, location of Masser Potato Farms
was rented from Ralph Masser by potato growers Sterman and Geraldine Masser
in 1959. An independent potato grower, Sterman ran the potato farm while
still in partnership with his father, Clarence, in Leck Kill, 10 miles
north of Sacramento. In 1967, Sterman and Gerri moved to Sacramento and
began to farm at the Sacramento potato farm location on 100 acres, which
was then purchased from Ralph Masser.
In 1970, Sterman and Gerri formed Sterman Masser, Inc. to farm and distribute
quality potatoes. The Massers used the original storage built in 1952
and added a small packing shed designed to house a packing line. The Masser
potato farm business continued to grow with the Massers' son, Keith, joining
the company in 1976. In 1978, a large addition was added to increase storage
capacity, add a cooling facility, and enlarge the farm's packing area.
In 1984, Sterman ventured into Pennsylvania's anthracite coal industry
and stepped out of Sterman Masser, Inc. Keith then took over farming and
potato distribution operations on what was now a 625-acre potato farm.
Continued Potato Farm Expansion
In 1990, expansion of the Masser potato farm continued with the installation
of a computerized packing line, more acres being farmed, and additional
cooler space being built. In 1998, the company's most recent expansion
was started with the building of a separate computerized facility and
packing shed, the installation of a new packaging line, and the construction
of an additional cooler facility. In May 1998, Keith's son David joined
the potato grower business as Vice President of Sales and Marketing. In
1999, the potato farm was expanded to a total of 4000 acres between 3
states, with 1000 potato acres and 3000 cash grain acres. Masser Potato
Farms has the ability to pack and distribute over 70,000,000 pounds of
potatoes each year.
Today, Masser Potato Farms is run by potato growers continually driven
to provide our customers and vendors with the best potatoes at the best
value through fully integrated farming
techniques, distribution capabilities,
and quality control measures.
